USA #TEXAS #LGBT MARRIAGE: a note from the Texas governor instructs state employees to continue discriminating, because SCOTUS? Pffft: that don' mean sheeit. It's all about cis privilege: people do NOT understand how deeply freaky life would be for them if EVERY "sincerely held religious belief" had to be honoured. They mean the common values held by "Conservative, Political-Evangelical Blond-Haired-Blue-Eyed-Jesus Christianity". Even the *regular* "sincerely held religious beliefs" have had their moments (in not-100-years-ago news: segregation, old white guy in Missouri groping a black waitress, bi-racial marriages criminalised/denied). Who gets to decide what is a "sincerely held religious belief" and what is a crackpot idea that should never be voiced or respected? Because you KNOW it'll be a bunch of rich white guys going, "oh, no, you misunderstood: it's OUR 'sincerely held religious beliefs' that are being threatened, yours don't count."

PNG #MoneyLaundering #CORRUPTION PROBE: PM O'Neill trumpets his intention to investigate lawyers/money as per the SBS exposure of same. Déjà vu, anyone? QUOTE: Papua New Guinea's former attorney-general says he has no confidence in a probe announced by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill into allegations of high-level money laundering. [...] Kerenga Kua, who was sacked by Mr O'Neill last year, says PNG and Australia already have relevant agencies to investigate the allegations. Mr Kua identifies five agencies which can and should probe the allegations: PNG's Ombudsman Commission can investigate alleged breaches of leadership code by politicians; alleged criminal acts can be investigated by the Taskforce Sweep Team, which has demonstrated capacity to deal with criminal issues, the PNG Law Society's disciplinary arm (PNG Lawyers Statutory Committee) should investigate any professional midconduct of lawyers, the conduct of of Australian lawyers needs to be referred through Australian regulatory authorities such as the Queensland Bar association and criminal matters in Australia can be referred to the Australian Federal Police. /QUOTE

USA #CHARLESTON #RACISM #TERRORISM #DylannRoof: why some still resist calling out #WhiteTerrorists. Conor Friedersdorf [http://theatln.tc/1RBfwdK] of The Atlantic addresses "the wrongheaded reflex of some media outlets to label all violent Muslims 'terrorists' and all violent white men 'mental cases'." QUOTE: Years ago, after an attack on a Sikh temple that’s mostly forgotten because it wasn't regarded as terrorism, I argued [http://bit.ly/WhiteTerrorists] that the reluctance to apply the label to acts carried out by white people is partly due to an awareness of what might happen next. When terrorism is invoked, many Americans––Republicans especially––have assented to indefinite detention; the criminalization of gifts to certain charities; secret, extrajudicial assassinations; ethnicity-based surveillance; and the torture even of people who mightknow about a future attack. Having undermined so many civil-liberties protections in pursuit of terrorists, the white majority and Republicans especially are alarmed at the idea of the homeland-security bureaucracy treating them as they’ve treated Muslim Americans. /QUOTE http://theatln.tc/1djKo4H

USA #GunControl #MassMurder #ThisAgain? To be clear: "the NRA" as an institution does not (publicly) blame the victims. One of their Board Member does, though. Cotton, who did not return a message left at his Houston-area law firm, pointed out on a Texas gun forum that Pinckney was a state senator who had voted against a law allowing gun owners to carry concealed weapons without permits. “Eight of his church members who might be alive if he had expressly allowed members to carry handguns in church are dead,” Cotton wrote. “Innocent people died because of his position on a political issue.” “Individual board members do not speak for the NRA,” [official NRA spokesperson] Baker said. USA #IN #LGBT RELIGIOUS PEOPLE: a financially ailing pizza place has raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars from the credulous, in support of their right to choose their customer base. [http://bit.ly/1Ivl0mG]
I will say, I don’t condone or endorse any of the vicious tirade of threats, hate mail & personal sledging of the owners. They are sincere in their beliefs, if slightly confused about the definition of “discrimination”, and I think we have to respect that. Mostly.
Concerns about safety led the owners to temporarily shut the restaurant down, as conservatives rallied to their side, raising over $500,000 through a crowd-sourcing website.
"It is not a sin that we bring gays into our establishment, and to serve them” she said. “It is a sin, though, if we condone — if we cater their wedding. We feel we are participating. We’re putting a stamp of approval on their wedding, and we cannot do that.”
Pressed by Cavuto to explain how that is not discrimination, O’Connor said that it wasn’t “hateful.”
Original story: http://bit.ly/1DuJkXY
Despite not believing that the bill would lead to targeted discrimination against members of the LGBT community, O’Connor told the station that her establishment would use the bill to avoid having to cater events like gay or non-Christian weddings.
"Discrimination" - I do no’ think it means wha’ you think it means. [h/t TPB]
…[the owner] said everything came down to the issue of choice. “That lifestyle is something they choose. I choose to be heterosexual. They choose to be homosexual. Why should I be beat over the head to go along with something they choose?” he asked.
I refer you, sir, to this inspired video: “When Did You Choose To Be Straight?” (http://bit.ly/1DuSYtC)

Bear with me - this is long, but I’m concerned about how easily misinformation becomes “truth”, especially to the conspiracy-minded who might Share this on.
Point: IIT’s FB page (http://bit.ly/IITfbIran) states that: “Islamic Republic of Iran has nothing to do with the Shi’ites who damage Islamic Unity”.
Now, that’s curious, because Wikipedia (http://bit.ly/IITwiki) says that, “89% of Iranians are Shi’a and 9% are Sunni”.
And Wikipedia (http://bit.ly/IITwiki-2) also says that, “Most Muslims in Turkey are Sunnis forming about 72%”
Wikipedia (http://bit.ly/ISIL-Wiki) also tells us that ISIL “joined other Sunni insurgent groups” in 2006.
(1) IIT are a group based in Sunni-majority Turkey
(2) IIT write vehement articles claiming that the *real* Islamic Republic of Iran is in fact the Sunni minority, suggesting that the Shi’ite majority are the ones “damaging Islamic Unity”.
(3) ISIL are Sunni, but that doesn’t fit in to the narrative IIT *want* to be true, because that makes Sunnis look bad.
(4) Now (speculating), IIT can concoct a labyrinthine scheme:
* ISIL is not genuinely Islamic or even Sunni
* why, then, does everyone say they are?
* because the US, UK, “Europe”, Israel and some of the Arab states are only PRETENDING to fight ISIL - it’s really a shell game where they distract you with misdirection!
* so, my initial reaction of “Why the hell would Israel be interested in helping to prop up this Islamic Group…?”
* exactly: they’re not really Sunni. Or Islamic.
That’s a massive logical overreach.
Out of interest, the “some of the Arab states” opposing ISIL are (of Muslim populations):
* Bahrain, 67% Shi’a;
* Jordan, 95% Sunni;
* Morocco, majority Sunni;
* Qatar, 99% Sunni;
* Saudi Arabia, 97% Sunni;
* UAE, 85% Sunni. http://on.fb.me/1FtlewO

My parents live in this town and the city legally can’t tear the tree down to build or anything because the tree has its own legal rights and they can’t do anything about it.
how does. how does this happen. how DID this happen
I love this story because this guy in the early 1800’s had so many great childhood memories of this tree and wanted to make sure it was protected no matter what. So he deeded the ownership of the tree to itself and everyone just went with it.
Then in 1942 this intense windstorm came and knocked the tree over. And people were bummed. But someone had saved an acorn from the original tree, so they planted that and now Son of the Tree That Owns Itself is over 50 feet tall.
And since this new tree is technically the offspring of the original tree it’s considered to have legally inherited the plot of land it’s inhabiting.
Two generations of trees owning land is amazing and if you don’t think this is the coolest thing get right out of my face.

#FRANCE #TERRORISM #ALJAZEERA #JeSuisCharlie #JournalismIsNotACrime: internal emails* showcase the breadth of opinions on the subject of freedom of speech v. bullying, victim-blaming v. victim-sanctifying, etc.
(* emails reproduced in full at the bottom of the article, http://bzfd.it/1B3RjIf)
The internal staff email chain began with a Jan. 8 email from Al Jazeera English’s executive producer Salah-Aldeen Khadr, asking his reporters to interrogate whether the attack on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper was “really an attack on free speech” and whether the slogan “Je Suis Charlie/I Am Charlie” is “alienating.”
Describing the incident as a “clash of extremist fringes,” Khadr was highly critical of the Charlie Hebdo staff:
"Defending freedom of expression in the face of oppression is one thing; insisting on the right to be obnoxious and offensive just because you can is infantile. Baiting extremists isn’t bravely defiant when your manner of doing so is more significant in offending millions of moderate people as well. And within a climate where violent response—however illegitimate—is a real risk, taking a goading stand on a principle virtually no one contests is worse than pointless: it’s pointlessly all about you."
In response, U.S.-based correspondent Tom Ackerman quoted a Jan. 7 piece from Ross Douthat in the New York Times:
"If a large enough group of someone is willing to kill you for saying something, then it’s something that almost certainly needs to be said, because otherwise the violent have veto power over liberal civilization, and when that scenario obtains it isn’t really a liberal civilization any more…. liberalism doesn’t depend on everyone offending everyone else all the time, and it’s okay to prefer a society where offense for its own sake is limited rather than pervasive. But when offenses are policed by murder, that’s when we need more of them, not less, because the murderers cannot be allowed for a single moment to think that their strategy can succeed."
Doha-based reporter Mohamed Vall wrote that supporting Charlie Hebdo ran the risk of encouraging more killings:
"And I guess if you encourage people to go on insulting 1.5 billion people about their most sacred icons then you just want more killings because as I said in 1.5 billion there will remain some fools who don’t abide by the laws or know about free speech."d http://on.fb.me/1DMd7Hz
