USA #IN #LGBT RELIGIOUS PEOPLE: a financially ailing pizza place has raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars from the credulous, in support of their right to choose their customer base. [http://bit.ly/1Ivl0mG]
I will say, I don’t condone or endorse any of the vicious tirade of threats, hate mail & personal sledging of the owners. They are sincere in their beliefs, if slightly confused about the definition of “discrimination”, and I think we have to respect that. Mostly.
QUOTE:
Concerns about safety led the owners to temporarily shut the restaurant down, as conservatives rallied to their side, raising over $500,000 through a crowd-sourcing website.

"It is not a sin that we bring gays into our establishment, and to serve them” she said. “It is a sin, though, if we condone — if we cater their wedding. We feel we are participating. We’re putting a stamp of approval on their wedding, and we cannot do that.”
Pressed by Cavuto to explain how that is not discrimination, O’Connor said that it wasn’t “hateful.”

QUOTE:
Despite not believing that the bill would lead to targeted discrimination against members of the LGBT community, O’Connor told the station that her establishment would use the bill to avoid having to cater events like gay or non-Christian weddings.

"Discrimination" - I do no’ think it means wha’ you think it means. [h/t TPB]
QUOTE:
…[the owner] said everything came down to the issue of choice. “That lifestyle is something they choose. I choose to be heterosexual. They choose to be homosexual. Why should I be beat over the head to go along with something they choose?” he asked.

Bear with me - this is long, but I’m concerned about how easily misinformation becomes “truth”, especially to the conspiracy-minded who might Share this on.
Point: IIT’s FB page (http://bit.ly/IITfbIran) states that: “Islamic Republic of Iran has nothing to do with the Shi’ites who damage Islamic Unity”.
Now, that’s curious, because Wikipedia (http://bit.ly/IITwiki) says that, “89% of Iranians are Shi’a and 9% are Sunni”.
And Wikipedia (http://bit.ly/IITwiki-2) also says that, “Most Muslims in Turkey are Sunnis forming about 72%”
Wikipedia (http://bit.ly/ISIL-Wiki) also tells us that ISIL “joined other Sunni insurgent groups” in 2006.
So:
(1) IIT are a group based in Sunni-majority Turkey
(2) IIT write vehement articles claiming that the *real* Islamic Republic of Iran is in fact the Sunni minority, suggesting that the Shi’ite majority are the ones “damaging Islamic Unity”.
(3) ISIL are Sunni, but that doesn’t fit in to the narrative IIT *want* to be true, because that makes Sunnis look bad.
(4) Now (speculating), IIT can concoct a labyrinthine scheme:
* ISIL is not genuinely Islamic or even Sunni
* why, then, does everyone say they are?
* because the US, UK, “Europe”, Israel and some of the Arab states are only PRETENDING to fight ISIL - it’s really a shell game where they distract you with misdirection!
* so, my initial reaction of “Why the hell would Israel be interested in helping to prop up this Islamic Group…?”
* exactly: they’re not really Sunni. Or Islamic.
That’s a massive logical overreach.
Out of interest, the “some of the Arab states” opposing ISIL are (of Muslim populations):
* Bahrain, 67% Shi’a;
* Jordan, 95% Sunni;
* Morocco, majority Sunni;
* Qatar, 99% Sunni;
* Saudi Arabia, 97% Sunni;
* UAE, 85% Sunni. http://on.fb.me/1FtlewO

St. Pauli’s peeback walls
Better Living through Chemistry.
My parents live in this town and the city legally can’t tear the tree down to build or anything because the tree has its own legal rights and they can’t do anything about it.
how does. how does this happen. how DID this happen
I love this story because this guy in the early 1800’s had so many great childhood memories of this tree and wanted to make sure it was protected no matter what. So he deeded the ownership of the tree to itself and everyone just went with it.
Then in 1942 this intense windstorm came and knocked the tree over. And people were bummed. But someone had saved an acorn from the original tree, so they planted that and now Son of the Tree That Owns Itself is over 50 feet tall.
And since this new tree is technically the offspring of the original tree it’s considered to have legally inherited the plot of land it’s inhabiting.
Two generations of trees owning land is amazing and if you don’t think this is the coolest thing get right out of my face.
That’s brilliant.

QUOTE:
The internal staff email chain began with a Jan. 8 email from Al Jazeera English’s executive producer Salah-Aldeen Khadr, asking his reporters to interrogate whether the attack on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper was “really an attack on free speech” and whether the slogan “Je Suis Charlie/I Am Charlie” is “alienating.”
Describing the incident as a “clash of extremist fringes,” Khadr was highly critical of the Charlie Hebdo staff:
"Defending freedom of expression in the face of oppression is one thing; insisting on the right to be obnoxious and offensive just because you can is infantile. Baiting extremists isn’t bravely defiant when your manner of doing so is more significant in offending millions of moderate people as well. And within a climate where violent response—however illegitimate—is a real risk, taking a goading stand on a principle virtually no one contests is worse than pointless: it’s pointlessly all about you."
In response, U.S.-based correspondent Tom Ackerman quoted a Jan. 7 piece from Ross Douthat in the New York Times:
"If a large enough group of someone is willing to kill you for saying something, then it’s something that almost certainly needs to be said, because otherwise the violent have veto power over liberal civilization, and when that scenario obtains it isn’t really a liberal civilization any more…. liberalism doesn’t depend on everyone offending everyone else all the time, and it’s okay to prefer a society where offense for its own sake is limited rather than pervasive. But when offenses are policed by murder, that’s when we need more of them, not less, because the murderers cannot be allowed for a single moment to think that their strategy can succeed."
Doha-based reporter Mohamed Vall wrote that supporting Charlie Hebdo ran the risk of encouraging more killings:
"And I guess if you encourage people to go on insulting 1.5 billion people about their most sacred icons then you just want more killings because as I said in 1.5 billion there will remain some fools who don’t abide by the laws or know about free speech."d http://on.fb.me/1DMd7Hz

#CLIMATE CHANGE: faith AND fact - you can have it all.
Scientist and devout Christian Katharine Hayhoe (http://bit.ly/WP-KHayhoe) being interviewed by @BillMoyersHQ.
QUOTE:
For a long time, many of us have felt that scientists are on one side, espousing one set of values, and Christians and/or conservatives are on the other side. And so along comes this new issue of climate change, which in my opinion has enormous theological implications and is entirely consistent with the Christian faith, to love others and to love our neighbours. So along comes this issue of climate change, but who are the primary spokespeople? It’s these pointy-headed scientists, who have been on the other side of the fence on many other issues regarding creation and evolution, the age of the earth and even other issues today, like genetic modification and things like that. So. It’s no surprise that when you get a messenger who’s not trusted, who you perceive as not sharing your values, why would you believe them?
[…]
I get 5 times as much hate mail from Christians than from any other group.
[…]
Caring about climate is entirely consistent with who we are as Christians, but: over the last several decades, we have increasingly begun to confound our politics with our faith - to the point where instead of our faith dictating our attitudes on political and social issues, we are instead allowing our political party to dictate our attitude on issues that are clearly consistent with who we are.
[…]
We’ve been told that you can’t be a Christian, or you can’t be a conservative, or you can’t be a person of faith - or even a person of integrity - and agree that climate is changing, that humans are responsible and that there’s something really important we need to do about it.

AUSTRALIA #AsylumSeekers #REFUGEES: the Temporary Protection Visa (#TPV) was last introduced by Howard - and it was disastrous. If assessed as “genuine” (as opposed to “economic”) refugees (and >90% are), why continue to punish them by holding the Temporary status over their heads? People need to start rebuilding their lives, not living as if they’re on parole.
They didn’t come all this way just to get drunk & lie on the beach collecting dole payments - that’s reserved for OUR young people. They want to work, they NEED to work - qualified doctors, police, plumbers & electricians are driving taxis, working in abattoirs, rounding up trolleys at shopping centres, cleaning offices at night…
